Course outline
This session will support delegates to develop in confidence when supporting those with disabilities. It will discuss the range and breadth of disability and look at disability stereotypes. Delegates will learn about the social model of disability and the importance of this both for disabled people and organisations. By acknowledging ableism exists, delegates will be able to acknowledge their bias and learn how to communicate appropriately and sensitively about disability. This session will provide the opportunity to increase awareness of the barriers that disabled people face and ways in which these can be removed.

Speakers:
Yasmin Sheikh
Yasmin Sheikh is Disability Rights UK’s senior trainer. She specialises in disability inclusion and this runs alongside her experience in the corporate world as a trainer in Race, Inclusion and Inclusive Leadership. Yasmin worked as a lawyer in the City for 12 years before setting up her own consultancy. She is also a multi-award winning international speaker, TEDx speaker, 2018 winner of the Asian Women of Achievement Awards (in association with Natwest) and Vice-Chair of Lawyers with Disabilities at the Law Society.
Tony Stevens
Tony Stevens is Head of Development at Disability Rights UK. He manages their training and consultancy work and publications. He originally joined DR UK in 2015 as Fundraising Manager. Previously Tony ran his own business and worked as a freelance writer, trainer and careers consultant. He has written a series of careers guides for disabled people including Into Higher Education, Into Apprenticeships and Into Sport.
