Understanding Racial Intersectionality: Building Racial Literacy and Cultural Competence
Intersectionality recognises that people hold multiple, overlapping identities that shape their lived experiences. When viewed through the lens of race, intersectionality helps us better understand how racial identity—combined with other aspects such as gender, class, or disability—can result in unique challenges and barriers.
This webinar will guide participants through key concepts of racial intersectionality, promoting greater racial literacy and cultural competence. By exploring the realities faced by individuals from global majority communities, participants will learn how to create safe, inclusive, and equitable spaces in both professional and educational settings.
Training topics will include:
- What is intersectionality and why it matters
- Exploring a range of racialised experiences and their impact
- Understanding how these experiences affect personal and professional life (e.g. work, home, communication)
- Practical strategies for creating safe and supportive spaces for colleagues and students from global majority communities
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the session, participants will:
- Develop a clear understanding of racial intersectionality and its role in shaping lived experience
- Recognise how overlapping identities can affect individuals across various contexts
- Gain practical knowledge on how to create safe, inclusive environments for members of the global majority
- Enhance their racial literacy to support equity and belonging in their workplace or school community
