Course outline
Originally defined by Harvard professor Amy Edmondson, the concept of psychological safety—the belief that one can speak up, ask questions, and express ideas without fear of humiliation or punishment—has become central to building healthy, high-performing communities.
This interactive seminar invites school leaders, pastoral staff, and educators to reflect on their current school culture and explore ways to foster an environment where all members—students, staff, and stakeholders—feel safe, heard, and supported. Through guided discussion and practical strategies, delegates will examine the role of psychological safety in wellbeing, performance, and collaboration.
Training topics will include:
- Defining psychological safety and its key characteristics
- The link between psychological safety, school culture, wellbeing, and performance
- Strategies to create a culture of open communication and trust
- Recognising common barriers to psychological safety and how to address them
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the session, participants will:
- Develop a clear and practical understanding of psychological safety as a concept and cultural goal
- Identify the markers of a psychologically safe environment within their school or team
- Gain practical strategies to promote trust, reduce fear, and encourage open communication
- Be better equipped to recognise and overcome barriers to psychological safety in their setting
